(SF novel) East of Nakba (112)
Chapter 37 Retired General "Shy-Rock"
(2) The 1948 Arab-Israeli War (Nakba) (3/3)
Israel declared its independence in 1948, when
Shy-Rock was 9 years old. He could clearly remember how his father reacted. His
father embraced the son and showed the joy all over his body. However, their joy
was short-lived when neighboring Arab countries flooded into the new state,
Israel. It was the so-called First Middle East War, and the Jews called it the
War of Independence.
Goddess of victory was with Jews who fought
tooth and nail. The Western ally of Israel especially the United States
strongly supported Israel both materially and spiritually. The Arab side was
defeated because it not only lacked the assistance of U.S.S.R., but also
suffered from internal disorder. At that time, the U.S.S.R. had to put their
priority to the reconstruction of their own state after World War II. They
could hardly help the Arabs.
Generally speaking, outnumbered one could
defeat rival. But as far as the Middle East wars were concerned, it was false.
The Arabs were utterly defeated. Arabs called the war "Nakba"
(Catastrophe). After that, the Arabs tried to revenge Jews through several
Middle East wars, but they could not get victory at all.
